Not another piano book
NOT Another Piano Book IS a piano book… But it’s NOT Another Piano Book.
“The furthest from a stuffy approach it is possible to be.”
JO QUAIL
INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED COMPOSER & VIRTUOSO CELLIST
Would you love to play piano?
Why have you never got started? Or why did you start and give up?
You think it’s too hard?
You think it’s too expensive?
You think you don’t have time?
You think you’re too old?
You think you’ll never be able to do it because you didn’t master it when you were young?
Not any more!
Just as much a mindset and motivation book as a way to get started playing piano, this is an easy-to-read look at why all the reasons you’ve convinced yourself you’ll never be able to play just aren’t true.
No, your fingers are NOT too long, short or fat!
And no, you don’t need a piano or keyboard to start reading NOT Another Piano Book – but you’ll soon want one once you start!
“I wish I could sit down at the piano and just play…”
My LIFE have I heard that sentence a lot of times during my career.
And whatever the rest of the sentence is for the person saying it, you can lay money on the fact that there is a “but” coming along soon.
-
But the piano teacher I had was boring.
-
But we couldn’t afford a piano when I was growing up.
-
But I don’t even own a keyboard.
-
But I could never fit a piano in my house.
-
But I don’t like classical music.
-
But it’s too expensive to learn.
Which one is you?
BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS, IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE YOU ANYMORE

MARK IN CONVERSATION
As part of BBC Radio Newcastle’s Book Week, listen to Mark in conversation with Alfie Joey, where they discuss Mark’s ‘Not Another Piano Book’, including piano playing myths, writing a book and Marks’s PhD in Heavy Metal, as well as piano playing and mental health. You can also hear an excerpt of Mark’s beautiful arrangement of “Local Hero”, which was recorded with kind permission from Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits to raise money for the NHS.
“I had spent years telling myself that something was not possible or not attainable, all based on circumstances I had experienced and accepted as the end of the story when I was a child. But things change, you change, and circumstances change.
So, what if the circumstances that have meant you have not yet played piano have changed too? What if the teacher whose lessons you hated as a child only showed you one way to play and there is another way?”
